Learning About Erosion Part 3 of 3: Erosion is usually gradual, but there are times when it takes place all too suddenly. Did you ever hear of a landslide? When water has loosened rocks and soil on steep terrain, under certain conditions it lets go suddenly and sweeps down into its valley. The falling rocks and soil can cause damage, injury, and death if people or buildings are in their way. Some of the forces that shape the surface of the Earth work over long periods of time but others act quickly.
